Mid-Sussex District: Citizen-focused Policing Pilot

Background

The pilot project aimed to:

  • Improve public confidence and feeling of security
  • Improve satisfaction of service users
  • Increase public involvement in policing

Action

During the pilot, Sussex police:

  • Provided Citizen Focus training to approximately 125 staff, through six half-day training sessions delivered by an external training provider
  • Linked training to PDR process
  • Surveyed 3,000 citizens living in Mid-Sussex (Community Engagement Survey).
  • Surveyed approximately 120 staff (Staff Insight Survey)

Learning

From the citizen survey, we learned that people's main concerns were:

  • Traffic and parking issues
  • Speeding motorists
  • Groups of young people
  • Litter / rubbish lying around
  • Having home broken into & something stolen
  • Things stolen from car or vehicle
  • Having car or vehicle stolen

Young people were particularly concerned about:

  • Groups of young people
  • Traffic and parking issues
  • Speeding motorists
  • Being insulted or pestered
  • Being physically attacked
  • Things stolen from car or vehicle

From the staff survey, we found that staff believed that the public's priorities were that police respond to emergency calls promptly, tackle anti-social behaviour, act with integrity and provide visible uniformed patrols. They felt that people put a lower priority on police working in partnership with other agencies, knowing the names/faces of commanders and being given statistics on performance.
