Merseyside: Community engagement in Liverpool 8

Background

The Liverpool 8 area of the city is where the majority of Liverpool's ethnic minority citizens live. Historically, the area has had poor relations with police. While some initiatives, such as community policing, have had a beneficial impact, the disproportional use of stop and search has negated this, and relationships are suffering.

Action

The situation was drawn to the attention of the Police Community Relations Unit, with whom Norma works closely. A community organisation, suggested by Norma, took the lead in organising a consultation event.

Norma also used her contacts and networks to publicise the event and ensure community participation.

Non-actions

It was agreed that action led by the police or the police authority would have a negative effect; this was the reason that the community organisation took the lead.

What next

Significant issues were raised at the meeting, some of which were to do with the challenges facing the community, and some with the process of the meeting itself. It is intended that these issues will be addressed through future activities planned by the pilot and the constabulary, together with other agencies.
