Community engagement
Organisations: other activities
For community engagement to have an impact on decision-making processes it should have a central position in an organisation. This means it needs to have senior management commitment. However, it should also have links to the existing public and user interface parts of the organisation. A community engagement approach which does not have these links is likely to have problems embedding it into the organisation. This means these questions should be asked:
- Where is community engagement activity currently situated?
- Are there any problems with the way it feeds into policy?
- Does community engagement have links to staff involved in current user and public focused activity e.g. service delivery? Are these links sufficient and is communication effective between the different parts of the organisation?
- Is there a community engagement champion?
- Is there sufficient support from senior management to develop and sustain community engagement work?
These and other issues are discussed in more detail in Planning your project.
