Project planning: monitoring and evaluation
Monitoring and evaluation are separate but related activities:
- Monitoring is the day to day management of a project. Effective monitoring ensures that the project is kept on track and that changes are quickly implemented, when needed.
- Evaluation may take place during the life time of a project, but it is a more strategic look at the outcomes of the project. Evaluation is covered in more detail in the Evaluating your project section of this Guide.
For monitoring a project the timetable and the risk register should act as the framework against which to assess progress. The project manager should make adjustments to the existing plan and activity where needed, as the project progresses. The experience and findings from this, often informal, monitoring activity can be used to inform the more robust evaluation process.
