Community profiling: census and other national data
Nomis: the online service of the Office for National Statistics:
CDU: the Census Dissemination Unit:
These two sites allow you to obtain data profiles for local government areas, and for the main geographical building blocks of the census such as wards and postcode sectors.
Another useful profiling site, which includes data on the performance of public services is http://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk This site has a number of additional advantages, such as interactive maps, and the ability to combine output areas.
Most Government Department and Agencies also provide profiling data (for example, DfES http://dfes.gov.uk/statistics )
Using these and similar sites, you can collate information about a geographical area almost instantaneously. However, there are limitations, such as the geographical definitions applied by each data set, and the lack of filtering. The lack of filtering means that you may be limited as to what you can analyse, for example, you will not be able to analyse the experience of certain crimes by tenure or by area.
