Thinking about contracting out?
Consider the following list of activities which might be contracted out in themselves or might be part of a wider process. Think about the risks and opportunities associated with each in terms of the points raised above. What should you consider in contracting any of these elements out to an outside organisation?
- Conducting a one off survey
- Conducting and maintaining a consultation panel
- Facilitation and management of a conference
- Facilitation of a series of focus groups
- Establishing an initial dialogue with stakeholder groups
- Maintenance of a database of community contacts
- Maintaining a dialogue and building relationships with certain communities - BME or faith
- First point of contact for a community involvement project (hotline for questions)
- Developing a communications strategy
- Responsibility for communication activities
- Speaking on the direction or strategy of an organisation
Think about the list above again. If any of these elements of work are contracted out, what would you as the commissioner have to do to ensure the work was successfully managed and owned by your organisation?
And which elements of work from the list or your own project could you successfully handle and manage in house?
